Newsletter Marketing - Define Your Newsletter Goals
by Vanson Tan
Once you have decided to begin marketing your company via an email newsletter it is
important to do some research and take the time to set some goals. Writing just for the
sake of writing won't get you anywhere. However, if you establish some goals and determine
a way to reach them through the content in your newsletter then you will be more likely to
achieve the goals you have.
What's Your Goal? The first thing you must identify is exactly what you are trying to
achieve with your newsletter. Do you want to increase the amount of traffic your blog
receives or are you hoping to create a reading community? You could be trying to create a
list to "sell" your products to or else you may want to make your brand stronger. Some
people may want to generate money through their newsletter or have a mixture of these goals.
Information. You will want to evaluate what kind of information you will provide in your
newsletter. Perhaps you want to explore a new theme each week that builds on the previous
theme. Or, perhaps you want to share other types of information and content such as
information from blogs / forums or other types of news. These will result in different types
of newsletters, but that's okay as long as the goal is begin met by the content that is
provided in the newsletter.
Advertising. If you have many readers then others may wish to advertise in your
newsletter. Of course, this is a great way to raise money for your company, however it
might not be in your best interest. It is important to evaluate whether this makes the
most sense for your company and services or not. It will take some serious consideration
and a long term plan to determine exactly what you need to do in regards to advertising.
Many times, however, advertising your own services and products is the best.
New Readers. If one of your goals is to gain new readers then you need to establish a
plan how you will go about accomplishing that. Having new readers means that you can
create a community of readers interested in the topics who may then discuss them further
on other blogs, in your forums, and the like. This could in turn gain even more readers.
Having new readers also means potential new customers. You should always keep this in mind
when it comes to your newsletters. Look at it from the point of view of a new reader and
see if it is appealing. This is an important exercise to ensure you aren't turning
potential new customers away.
