About My Control Panel

My Control Panel is an alternate interface to the Windows Control panel. Rather than needing to figure out which tab on which Control Panel utility Should be used to accomplish a particular task, My Control Panel displays a list of tasks. Simply click on the task you wish to accomplish and the appropriate Control Panel utility will open to the specific tab required. This makes Windows configuration much easier.

Although the standard Control Panel looks and behaves like a normal folder, it doesn't exist as a folder. Each Control Panel utility is actually a dynamic- link library, except instead of having a .dll file name extension, it has a .cpl extension. The Control Panel files are opened by an executable file named control.exe.

My Control Panel is an HTML application (.hta) with links to short cuts to each tab in each Control Panel utility. Control Panel utilities generally provide a safer way to modify the Windows registry. However many Control Panel utilities allow you to modify critical system configurations, so their use can be dangerous. My Control Panel is no more, nor no less, dangerous than the standard Control Panel.

Some Control Panel utilities, like Taskbar and Start Menu Properties don't have a related .cpl file, but thay can still be launched from a regular shortcut created by dragging their Control Panel icon into a folder.

This version of My Control Panel does not provide links every Control Panel utility. It is designed more for a single user non-networked system. The user interface is not fancy. In future versions, I’ll add more Control Panel shortcuts and improve the interface. My Control Panel, being an HTA application and a bunch of shortcuts, means that you have the source code and you are free to modify it, improve it, and redistribute it.
