Questionnaire - Elderly Driver; Is it Time to Hang Up the Car Keys?
By Stephen Bucaro
As we reach old age, our hearing and vision deteriorate, our reflexes slow, we have less
range of motion and less muscular strength. This can affect our driving ability. Has
your driving ability deteriorated to the point that you have become a danger to yourself
and others on the highway? Truthfully answer the 16 questions in this questionnaire
to determine if you have reached the age where it's time to hang up the car keys.
You may be looking a this test to determine your own safe driving ability, or you
may be suspecting that an older friend or relative that you care about has reached the
age where it's no longer safe for them to drive. It's sad when an elderly person has to
give up the independence provided by the freedom to drive, but it happens to everyone
sooner or later. It's better to stop driving before anyone gets injured or killed.
Ask the elderly individual to answer the 16 questions in this questionnaire, or better
yet, answer the questions with them to make sure they're answered truthfully. If the
individual taking this text is on the borderline between being a safe or an unsafe driver,
the results of the test to will point to alternatives that might help them keep driving
safely for a while longer.
